Palestine Telegraph, an online Palestinian newspaper based in Gaza and London, is seeking a professional translator. The translator will convert news stories and commentaries from Arabic to English and English to Arabic, ensuring that the translated version conveys the meaning of the original as clearly as possible, while maintaining a high level of linguistic accuracy (sentence structure, grammar, etc.)
Typical work activities:
The translation process usually involves a combination of the following activities:
o Reading original material and rewriting it in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained and that the translated piece reads smoothly and naturally.
o Using specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used.
o Proofreading and final translated versions.
o Using the Internet and email as research tools throughout the translation process.
o Updating certain Web sites on daily basis.
o Prioritizing work to meet deadlines.
Requirements:
o Excellent command of the Arabic and English, including contemporary conversational usage.
o An additional talent for original reporting and writing with a journalistic style is a plus.
o Translation certificate and minimum of one year of related experience/performance; candidates will be asked to complete a timed Arabic-to-English translation test.
o Good understanding of all facets of the political conditions related to the Palestinian cause.
o Strong command of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Word.
o Ability to work swiftly and under pressure on multiple tasks simultaneously.
o Willing and able to work overtime and at odd hours if necessary.
o Team player, takes constructive feedback well and continually strives to improve his or her work outputs
Three references vouching for the candidate's translation skills and work ethic must be submitted, along with three work samples.
